Miles Morales’ comics story mirrors the story of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Miles was created by Brian Michael Bendis in 2011 as part of Earth-1610, Marvel’s “Ultimate” universe. The Ultimate line was an alternate canon of the Marvel universe with modernized and unexpected twists on each of the main characters. Bendis had launched Ultimate comics in 2000 with his own take on Peter Parker, where he retold the character’s history in a contemporary setting.

As Bendis was finishing his run with Peter in the late 2000s, The Amazing Spider-Man films were casting for their new lead actor. A popular fan choice was Donald Glover. Although the role eventually went to Andrew Garfield, Bendis was so excited about Glover’s potential that he designed a new Spider-Man based on him, who would take over as the second Ultimate Spider-Man when the run with Peter was done.

And thus Miles Morales was introduced in the wake of The Death of Spider-Man. Bendis gave Miles a number of differences from Peter, including new powers, new cultural background, and even a new age range; but Miles’ good heart and relatable problems were very much the same. With Miles Morales, Bendis had created a new Spider-Man for a new generation who unique enough to be his own character but familiar enough to be beloved.

With major stories split across two parallel universes, Marvel started to play with the multiverse in their comics and began shifting their focus to only Earth-616. After crossover events like Spider-Men, Spider-Verse, and Secret Wars, Miles was eventually integrated into the main Marvel universe, where he remains to this today.

So if you’re excited to see more of Miles Morales in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and maybe someday the MCU, this is the guide for you! Gathered below is the complete history of Miles in the comics, as well as his appearances in TV, movies, and video games. Enjoy reading!

Miles Morales: Ultimate Comics Spider-Man (2011)

Miles Morales was created in the last few years of the Ultimate line of comics, but he has become the main lasting legacy of that universe. Killing Peter Parker was controversial at the time, but because it was in an alternate reality and because of the strength of Brian Michael Bendis‘ writing, fans soon accepted Miles as the new Ultimate Spider-Man. His original series was created by by Bendis and Sara Pichelli and picks up immediately after the Death of Spider-Man.

Miles’ Ultimate Comics Spider-Man series would lead into the Spider-Men series, also by Bendis and Pichelli. As the first 616/1610 crossover ever, Miles finally meets Peter Parker, inspiring the movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse!
