The Original Ghost Riders (1950s-1980s)

After the rise of Marvel Comics, the first modern Ghost Rider comics debuted in 1973 by Roger Stern. The character was introduced as Johnny Blaze, cursed by Mephisto and possessed by the demon Zarathos. The series also laid the groundwork for Johnny’s long-lasting relationship with Roxanne Simpson.

But before Johnny Blaze became the Ghost Rider, there were actually two earlier Ghost Riders. Coming originally from Western comics, Rex Fury and Carter Slade were later rebranded as Phantom Riders. While generally not related to Ghost Rider comics canon, Carter Slade is still important to the historical legacy of the character and even had a major role in the 2007 Ghost Rider movie (played by Sam Elliott). Slade would also star in the B-stories of The Original Ghost Rider, Johnny’s reprint comics series.

Ghost Rider: Danny Ketch and the Midnight Sons (1990)

In the 1990s, a new Ghost Rider took over, Danny Ketch! Though writer Howard Mackie wouldn’t admit it, the series took liberal inspiration from Spider-Man comics. On just a surface level, Danny was a younger hero with personal problems and his girlfriend Stacy was the daughter of a police captain! But the series stayed true to its horror roots, and the new Ghost Rider was a hit, especially thanks to Mark Texeira’s legendary art. Editor Bobbie Chase quickly launched a number of spinoff series capitalizing on their success, creating the Midnight Sons!

Keep in mind that Ghost Rider #28-50 are parallel to Ghost Rider & Blaze: Spirits of Vengeance #1-23. Alternate issues for the maximum reading experience!

Ghost Rider: The Return of Danny Ketch (1994)

After the crossover madness of the Midnight Sons era, the skullheads’ stories continued for several more years in the late ’90s. Most of the action stayed in the main Ghost Rider comics with the return of Danny Ketch and the full truth of his powers.

The later Ghost Rider issues also featured a number of surprising guest stars, including a major role for Jennifer Kale. Meanwhile, Vengeance tried to go solo… to mixed results (Vengeance wouldn’t be seen again for nearly 30 years ?).
