While classic Loki had some great stories from Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Walter Simonson, he was truly reinvigorated in the 2010s. Tom Hiddleston’s portrayal in the MCU and Kieron Gillen’s work on Journey into Mystery have completely changed the God of Mischief in the comics, transforming him into the complex character we love today. Gathered below are some of the finest stories from the history of Loki, including his many variants, his plots to thwart Thor, and his journey into becoming a semi-heroic character of his own.

“What did you expect?”
Classic Loki (1960s-2010s)
The Marvel comics version of Loki was created in the 1960s as a simple villain for Thor. He quick rose to prominence as the Avengers’ first villain, similar to his trajectory in the MCU. But for much of his tenure, the classic Loki was very different from the character we know today. His best moments are in Walter Simonson’s Thor, including the time he turned Thor into a frog!

Loki: Journey into Mystery (2010s)
Loki’s radical modern transformation started with J. Michael Straczynski’s Thor, where he rebirthed Loki in form of a woman. Although it was published in the Thor series, the Loki parts have been collected as “Loki: Mistress of Mischief.” This series led directly into Siege, a huge turning point in the history of Loki comics.
Kieron Gillen and Al Ewing relaunched Loki in the 2010s with their “Kid Loki trilogy.” Gillen started with a few issues of Thor, then led the charge with significant runs in Journey into Mystery and Young Avengers. Al Ewing picked up the story with Loki: Agent of Asgard, which led into the recent Defenders Beyond. Together, Gillen and Ewing’s work on Loki totally revitalized the character in the comics, allowing comics Loki to stand toe-to-toe with Tom Hiddleston’s phenomenal performance in the MCU.

Loki variants!
With the popularity of Loki’s 2021 Disney+ series and the upcoming second season, now is the best time to brush up on the history of Sylvie Lushton and Lady Loki in the comics! Because of Loki’s shapeshifting abilities and genderfluidity, “Lady Loki” is simply Loki in woman form. Meanwhile, Sylvie’s history is totally different from the MCU, but her stories are still worth a look if you’re interested!
