It’s been a little over a year since we first revealed the title of the highly anticipated Spider-Verse sequel. Not long after, Sony Pictures Animation unveiled a first look at Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse back in December 2021. Since then, not many updates regarding the project have been provided.
The film will feature Miles Morales returning to the big screen alongside Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People, set to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered. One of the new faces joining the fray will be Spider-Man 2099, as seen from the first look.
We also know that a number of new Spider-Variants will appear in the film. These include Jessica Drew’s Spider-Woman, Supaidaman, Scarlet Spider, Spider-Punk, Cyborg Spider-Woman, and Spider-Man: India. To date, there has been no word on if the previous team of Spider-Heroes will also return for the sequel. The only heroes set to return for the sequel would be Jake Johnson’s Peter B. Parker and Nicolas Cage as Spider-Noir from the first film.
In addition, we have now learned that more Spider-heroes are set to make their appearance in this film, and this time, they’re quite familiar to us all.
MCU and PS4 Spider-Men will appear in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
The Cosmic Circus has learned, via a number of sources, that two of the Spider-Men set to appear in the upcoming Spider-Verse sequel are Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man and the Spider-Man from the highly popular Playstation game of the same name.
As of now, there is no word as to whether or not Tom Holland would return to voice his Peter Parker for this. However, we’ve been told that the character in that film and the one from the previous MCU installments are the same.
The same can be said for Yuri Lowenthal’s Spider-Man. The character from the Playstation game and the one in the film are the same. And given his incredible voice-acting experience, Lowenthal will likely reprise his role for the film.
Implications of MCU Spider-Man and PS4 Spider-Man appearing in Across the Spider-Verse
It appears that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will serve as the next outing for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. But will the events of that film play a factor in what’s happening in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse?
Will the MCU acknowledge the events of this Spider-Verse sequel moving forward? And if Holland‘s Spider-Man can crossover into the Spider-Verse, can the same be said for the characters from this franchise crossing over for Avengers: Secret Wars?
As for the PS4 Spider-Man, this isn’t his first Spider-Verse rodeo. During the comic event Spider-Geddon, the PS4 Spider-Man actually played a massive part in the multiversal storyline. He even interacted with multiple Spider-Variants, including an alternate Miles.
It’s unknown whether those events will actually translate into the film. It will be fun nonetheless to see this experienced Spider-Man interact with Miles from the Spider-Verse franchise.
More Spider-Variants are yet to be announced
As of now, with Holland and Lowenthal’s Spider-Men appearing in this film, there are approximately 13 Spider-Variants confirmed for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. And while those may seem like a lot, let us remind you that producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have confirmed that the sequel has added approximately 240 characters and takes place across six universes.
Now, whether or not those 240 characters are all Spider-Variants hasn’t been confirmed, but per our sources, there is an estimated number of at least 20 Spider-Variants in this upcoming sequel. Some of these variants might be a couple more fan-favorite Spiders.
According to one source, there have been discussions about incorporating Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Men as a cameo. Although according to our source, it is not confirmed whether they will be added in for Across the Spider-Verse or be saved for the next sequel, Beyond the Spider-Verse.
[Editor’s Note: In addition, in April 2022 insider @EmberOnMain on Twitter reported that she’d heard that not only would Tom Holland be in Across the Spider-Verse but both Maguire and Garfield were set to be in it as well. However, we can only confirm what we’ve reported above.]
Our same source has also disclosed that similar discussions have taken place for Josh Keaton and Christopher Daniel Barnes, potentially to reprise their roles from the Spectacular Spider-Man and the 90s Animated Spider-Man series, respectively.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will swing into theaters on June 2, 2023. Are you excited for this movie? What other Spider-Man variants would you like to see pop up in the Spider-Verse? Let us know on our Discord or other social media linked at the top!
