‘Kingdom Hearts’ Guide Part 2: Union χ
Kingdom Hearts Union χ is the focus of part two of my Kingdom Hearts guide. Union χ was originally divided into two parts. The first act was a complete retelling of the events of Kingdom Hearts χ, set in the Data World and without the Keyblade War. The second act now tells the story of the new Union Leaders and their adventures in this Data World remake of their world.
[Note: If you missed part one or need a refresher on Kingdom Hearts χ, please visit the first part of the guide here.]
Act 2: Union X and the new Union Leaders
In this second act, the Keyblade War is over, the Foretellers are gone, and the Dandelions have escaped into what appears to be a restored Daybreak Town. To them, it feels as though the world has simply continued.
In reality, they have been moved into a data copy of their old world, and nearly everyone’s memories of the war have been erased. The tragedy still happened in the real world, but the surviving wielders were placed inside a carefully constructed simulation where they could live out their lives without remembering the war. This is the point where Kingdom Hearts Union χ stops merely retelling the browser game and becomes the true continuation of the story.
Following Ava’s instructions, the five Dandelions chosen by Ava to be the new Union Leaders arrive at the site of the Keyblade Graveyard to succeed the Foretellers and meet for the very first time: Ephemer, Skuld, Brain, Ventus, and Lauriam. These five characters are the only ones whose memories of the real world were not erased and remember the events of the Foretellers and the Keyblade War.

The five head for the Foreteller’s Chamber in Daybreak Town, where Brain finds and peers through a copy of the Book of Prophecies left in the Chamber. To avoid the conflict that the five rival unions experienced before over the competition for Lux, the new leaders agree to unite the wielders under a cooperative system called Union χ (or Union Cross). This is meant to help ensure that these divisions could never create another Keyblade War.
As their first act together, they also create new Spirits. These are friendly Dream Eaters who can accompany and protect the Dandelions on their missions.
There is already a problem, however: these are not the five names Ava had originally selected as the Union Leaders. As we know from earlier, Strelitzia was supposed to be one of them. However, someone murdered her in the real world, stole her rulebook, and took her place as one of the five.
The audience playing the game knows there is an impostor among them, but the leaders themselves do not. To make matters even more interesting, Lauriam, one of the leaders, is Strelitzia’s older brother and has no idea his missing sister was meant to stand beside him.
The murder mystery of Strelitzia: SOLVED
As The Player continues their quest of collecting the light with other wielders, strange glitches began to appear throughout the Data Daybreak Town, and the new leaders soon discover that another world—one that was never connected to the original Daybreak Town—is forcing its way into their simulation.
Brain studies The Book of Prophecies and the computer controlling the Data World to find a way to fix the system’s glitches. While he figures out a way to do so with the help of the Player, he eventually finds the list of Union Leaders that Ava received from the Master of Masters inside The Book of Prophecies.
The names reveal the truth: Ventus was never supposed to be among them. Strelitzia was the fifth leader. Someone altered the group after her death, and Ventus had unknowingly been living in the place stolen from her.
When Brain confronts Ventus alongside the other leaders (except Lauriem), Ventus begins to recover the memories buried in his heart. Before the Keyblade War, someone appearing to be Master Ava approached him and told him that he had been chosen as a Union Leader.
Ventus followed this false Ava to the abandoned house where Strelitzia was waiting. Under the figure’s influence, he struck Strelitzia down, took her rulebook, and assumed her position. The trauma was then suppressed, leaving Ventus with no memory of what he had done or how he had been manipulated.
Maleficent???
Just as you thought that Kingdom Hearts wasn’t confusing enough, this is where Maleficent unexpectedly enters the story. Since we’re going in chronological order, this may confuse some readers, but I’ll break it down as simply as I can.

After her defeat in the first Kingdom Hearts game, she uses the power of darkness to travel into the past. Because time travel in Kingdom Hearts requires a person to abandon their body, Maleficent arrives as only a heart and expects to alter history from the distant Age of Fairy Tales.
However, the Master of Masters anticipated that someone from the future might attempt exactly this. So, Maleficent does not arrive in the real Enchanted Dominion of the past, but rather inside its Data World projection. There she encounters one of the six remaining Darknesses.
The Darkness explains that the Data World was created partly to prevent Maleficent’s knowledge of the future from contaminating the real past. So the Darkness offers Maleficent a way out. At the center of Daybreak Town’s clock tower is a device that contains several metal pods called lifeboats. These lifeboats can take a person’s heart from their body and cast it through time and space.
To regain their body at the destination, however, the traveler needs two things waiting for them: a medium connected to their physical form and someone with memories of them.
Lauriam’s search for Strelitzia and encounter with Maleficent
Amid all this, Lauriam searches for clues about his missing sister. He does not yet know that Strelitzia is dead; he only knows that she should have joined the Dandelions and that no one has seen her since before the war.
His search eventually brings him to Elrena, another Dandelion and former member of Strelitzia’s party. Elrena’s Chirithy remembers seeing Strelitzia walking toward town with someone wearing a black coat shortly before Strelitzia’s disappearance. It later claims to have seen a girl resembling Strelitzia again, this time wearing a white coat and walking beside the same mysterious figure. (More on this later.)
Lauriam’s investigation takes him to the clock tower, where he encounters Maleficent just as she is attempting to escape. He tries to stop her, but she easily defeats him and enters the lifeboat. Maleficent uses one of the lifeboats to escape the data world and return to the real Daybreak Town.
From there, Darkness directs her to use the lifeboat again and travel forward to her own era. Her empty robe will eventually serve as the medium for reconstructing her body, while the memories held by Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather will restore her form at the Mysterious Tower, as we see in Kingdom Hearts 2. (Pretty neat connection, huh?)

Mini side note: lifeboats
Keep in mind that there are 7 lifeboats in both the Data World and the Real World. The lifeboats in the Data World bring you to the Real World. The lifeboats in the Real World can take your heart and send it across time, fixating on a waypoint where it needs to be connected to a medium to reform your body and to someone with memories that remember you. That way, your body can be reformed with a sense of self.
In the Data World, Maleficent took one lifeboat, and another was destroyed in the battle with Lauriam. In the Real World, Maleficent took another to travel forward in time to the events of Kingdom Hearts 2. That means that there are five lifeboats in the Data World and six in the Real World.
True Darkness meets pure Light
While Ephemer, Brain, and Skuld discuss their findings amongst themselves in the Data Daybreak Chamber, Lauriam arrives, injured from his fight with Maleficent and, briefly believing the others may have been hiding information about his sister, attacks them in a fit of rage.
Then Ventus enters the room and confesses that he remembers what happened and that he killed Strelitzia. This causes Lauriam to attack Ventus before a formless Darkness emerges from Ventus and reveals itself as the true murderer.
The Union Leaders challenge the Darkness, but it cannot be defeated like an ordinary enemy because it has abandoned its physical form. Brain, Ephemer, Skuld, Lauriam, and the Player fight together, yet their Keyblades have no solid form to destroy.
Darkness then explains why it hid inside Ventus. By possessing a heart of exceptional light, it could separate itself from the greater whole of darkness and preserve an individual will. Ventus, in turn, had become a heart of pure light.
Ventus wakes up and understands that if Darkness used him to obtain a distinct identity, then he can use that connection against it. He unleashes his light and traps the Darkness into a form contained within his own heart. As he traps the darkness in his heart, Ventus enters a deep sleep, from which he never wakes again until MUCH MUCH LATER DOWN THE ROAD.
The return of Luxu and “the True Dandelion”
While the Union Leaders fight within the Data World, the lone Darkness that helped Maleficent escape stands in the Real Daybreak Town, waiting for the outcome of the Data World to unfold.
To the surprise of the Darkness, Luxu enters the lifeboat room in the real Daybreak Town carrying a person wrapped entirely in a white robe. Acting on the Master’s instructions, he places the figure into one of the lifeboats and calls them “a seed of light to be planted in the future—the true Dandelion.” That leaves only five working lifeboats in the Real World.
The identity of the True Dandelion is never revealed, but many assume it may be connected to Strelitzia. Remember earlier when Elrena’s Chirithy told Lauriam they saw Strelitzia walking toward town with someone wearing a black coat and that they had seen a girl resembling Strelitzia again, this time wearing a white coat and walking beside the same mysterious figure? The white clothing and Strelitzia’s future appearance in Quadratum have naturally made her the leading possibility. But the game never confirms it.
Luxu confronts the Darkness
Luxu then confronts the Darkness that followed Maleficent out of the data world. Their conversation reveals that the Master understood the rules of time travel and that the Gazing Eye Keyblade could act as a medium for the Master’s future body, while Luxu’s memories of his master could restore him at the destination. By sending his eye forward through generation after generation of keyblade wielders, the Master created the conditions needed to travel into the future.
He also reveals that he’s been keeping track of the thirteen Darknesses that the Master of Masters was trying to get rid of. So far, we know that five were trapped in the hearts of the Foretellers, one is in the heart of the Master of Masters, and one is in Luxu’s heart. That makes seven thus far. And there is one that is currently in front of Luxu, which makes eight. Then there is the one in the Data World confronting the Union Leaders, which makes nine.
That leaves four Darknesses unaccounted for. The Darkness before Luxu reveals that the other four remaining are in the Data World. With that in mind, nothing stands between Luxu and the Real World Darkness to face each other… except we don’t see what happens in that fight.
A critical crossroad for this Kingdom Hearts story
After Ventus contains Darkness in the Data World, the Union Leaders realize the Data World has begun sealing itself. Maleficent’s use of the lifeboat triggered the shutdown process, transforming the simulation into a cage meant to trap the Darknesses. Once sealed, anyone left inside will be lost along with the Darknesses trapped there.
Ephemer, Skuld, Brain, Lauriam, Ventus, the Player, and Elrena reach the lifeboat room, but only five usable pods remain. Ultimately, Lauriam, Ventus, Elrena, and Brain enter four pods because, of them, Brain has the best chance of extracting the remaining Dandelions and saving everyone.
Before leaving, Brain gives The Book of Prophecies and the Keyblade known as Master’s Defender to Ephemer. Although Brain had carried them, he believes they were always meant to be passed to Ephemer. Ephemer sends the four pods from the Data World into the Real World, leaving himself, Skuld, and the Player behind with a single unused pod.
In the real Daybreak Town, Brain sends Lauriam, Ventus, and Elrena onward through time so they will survive the Real World’s destruction. He then devises a desperate plan: return two empty pods to the data world so Ephemer and Skuld can escape. He also hopes to awaken the sleeping Dandelions after the data world falls.
In that moment, Luxu arrives, presumably after winning his fight with the Darkness, and reveals that the Data World was designed as a prison for the Darkness. Everyone who remains inside will be sealed away, and without a medium and memories waiting in the future, the lifeboat passengers may never regain their bodies.
Luxu nevertheless praises Brain for trying to save everyone, remarking that it is unfortunate “Brain has only one lifetime.” However, the scene cuts to black and remains ambiguous, leaving us unsure what happened next.
The final four: The Player confronts the Darkness
Back in the Data World, the four final Darknesses emerge to confront Ephemer, Skuld, and the Player. They demand that the trio open a gate into the data worlds for the Darkness to take over. Ephemer refuses, knowing that releasing them would render every sacrifice meaningless.

As the trio prepares to fight, Ephemer tells the Player to run into the lifeboat and escape. However, in a surprising twist, the Player suddenly turns on Ephemer and Skuld. They claim that Darkness has already consumed their heart, attack Ephemer and Skuld, and offer to return control of the body if Ephemer opens a gate.
The four Darknesses join the assault. When the Player raises their Keyblade over Skuld, Ephemer is left with no choice but to fire a beam through the Player’s chest and open a portal behind them, pulling the Player and all four Darknesses into the passage between data worlds.
Then, just as the Darknesses disappear, the two pods Brain sent back arrive. Ephemer and Skuld enter them and travel into the Real World. When they arrive, there is no one there, and they watch as the real Daybreak Town starts to collapse around them.
The Realm of Light as they know it is about to fracture into thousands of individual pieces, which we will one day know as the individual Disney worlds that we visit throughout the Kingdom Hearts franchise. They return to the pods and travel through time as the tower falls on them, sending them toward separate destinies in time and space.
Meanwhile, inside the data cable, the four Darknesses congratulate the Player for forcing Ephemer to create the portal. Then the Player laughs, revealing that they were never possessed by the Darkness at all.
The betrayal against Ephemer and Skuld was all part of an elaborate ruse by the Player. They made Ephemer believe there was no other way so that he would trap them together with the four Darknesses inside the data cable.
With the exit sealed from both the outside by Ephemer and inside by the Player, those four Darknesses were now trapped inside the collapsing Data World. The Player sacrifices their future to save Ephemer, Skuld, and every world that might have been consumed if the Darknesses had gotten free. Exhausted by the fight, the Player embraces Chirithy as white light fills the Data World.
The choice of sleep or rebirth
As the Realm of Light splits into individual worlds and the Data Daybreak Town collapses, the Data Daybreak Town enters a suspended state of sleep. Within this white light, we see that the remaining Dandelions are transformed into sleeping hearts.
Each Chirithy takes hold of its wielder’s heart, and together they become the Dream Eaters that will protect those hearts while they sleep. These Dream Eaters are seen later on in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. The friendly Spirits are not simply creatures native to the Realm of Sleep, but rather are the Chirithys of the ancient keyblade wielders, still guarding their sleeping companions centuries after the Keyblade War.
Chirithy offers the Player the same choice: they can fall asleep and be protected, or refuse sleep and let their heart continue into another life. The Player chooses not to sleep. After one final embrace, their heart leaves the dying world, and we see glimpses of the player’s newly reborn life.
A blue-robed figure receives a white-haired infant from a black-haired woman, presumably to watch over and care for the child as they take him to the Destiny Islands and raise him. That child would eventually become the man we know in Kingdom Hearts as Xehanort, the ultimate antagonist in the Kingdom Hearts franchise.
Where everyone ends up in Union χ
The Kingdom Hearts Union χ finale then reveals where most of the lifeboats scattered the survivors across time:
- Ephemer’s pod opens amongst the flooded ruins of Daybreak Town.
- Maleficent arrives in the future of Kingdom Hearts 2.
- Lauriam awakens in a field of flowers as a white butterfly flutters by.
- Elrena remains unconscious in a mountainous dark area as a thunderstorm rages overhead.
- Ventus is unconscious in the Keyblade Graveyard and is approached by an unknown figure.
- Skuld’s destination is not shown.

The mystery of Luxu and Brain
While what happens directly after the conversation with Luxu and Brain remains a mystery, we do get to see the aftermath of that conversation play out in the finale of Kingdom Hearts Union χ.
In the Keyblade Graveyard, we see a hooded figure dragging the Black Box and the Master of Masters’ Keyblade. At first glance, many suspect this to be Luxu, but when he removes his hood, we see Brain’s face.
This is where the first unknown mystery lies, as there is no direct confirmation whether Luxu took over Brain’s body as a vessel or if he took on Brain as an apprentice. However, there is a secret report from Luxu in Kingdom Hearts 3 that reveals that he “bequeathed his Keyblade to one of the Union leaders, just as the Master instructed.” So it’s likely that he gave Brain the keyblade and made him his apprentice.
To make matters all the more confusing, we see another scene where Brain awakens in a mysterious city known as Scala ad Caelum. A man named Sigurd arrives and is already waiting for him, returning his hat, and says that Brain’s arrival at that exact time and place had been foretold.
Sigurd then leads Brain to the city square, where he leads him to a statue of the city’s founder. Brain recognizes the statue as Ephemer, who is now honored as Scala’s founder and first Keyblade Master. This suggests Ephemer built Scala Ad Caelum shortly after the destruction of the Realm of Light, and that Brain was somehow sent into the future.
Now, this mystery would have been addressed in the canceled Missing Link game, but I’m certain that the upcoming Kingdom Hearts IV will find a way to address these connections.
That’s all for the Kingdom Hearts Union χ part of this guide
