What’s next for Star Wars The High Republic
With the release of Trials of the Jedi, for many, the main story of The High Republic has come to an end as the Nihil are defeated and the path to the prequels has been set. But there’s still a wealth of High Republic content to come, expanding the Star Wars era and even concluding the main story for several characters. This article will cover what is still expected to come and some theories on what may happen with future stories.
[Warning: full spoilers for Trials of the Jedi by Charles Soule and other content from The High Republic, so make sure you are up to date before reading!]
The High Republic upcoming comics
There are still ongoing comics within the world of The High Republic that are currently wrapping up from the events of Trials of the Jedi. Two comics from Dark Horse and Marvel are still to be released this month (July) to end their stories.
The High Republic Adventures #20 is the final issue of Dark Horse’s The High Republic Adventures and is set to release on July 16th, bringing back the creative team that started off the Adventures line back in 2021. Written by Daniel José Older, the comic will be set after the Battle of Eriadu and will explain what is next for the Jedi and other characters that have been present in the series.
The High Republic: The Finale #1 is set to release on July 30th. Written by Cavan Scott, the one-shot will aim to finish up the story of Keeve Trennis and the plethora of characters from the world of the Marvel comics. The plot teases “faces from across the best-selling multimedia initiative” and will aim to answer just how and why Keeve ends up leaving the order, which has been known since the beginning of the initiative, as it has shown up in many of Scott’s other works.
Charles Soule’s The Broken Blade was teased at the end of the mini-series The Blade, which took place during Phase 2, and The Broken Blade has been a mystery ever since. Presumably taking place within Phase 3 of The High Republic, the comic, written by Charles Soule, will follow Porter either before or after the battle of Eriadu. He’ll continue the search for his sister and find his place within the Jedi Order after coming out of retirement for them during Phase 1. Not much else is known, including a release date, but I would presume it will come out either this year or next, provided it is still happening.
Future The High Republic books
Whilst Trials of the Jedi was the last book for the High Republic era, similar to that of Wayseeker, we have an Acolyte tie-in book arriving on July 29th to expand on the late High Republic era, close to that of the show.
The Acolyte: Crystal Crown, written by Tessa Gratton, will see Yord Fandar and Jecki Lon team up as a visit to a coming-of-age ceremony as featured guests goes terribly wrong. This book will no doubt come with several High Republic connections similar to Wayseeker, which will help expand on the novels, hopefully feeling like a bit of an epilogue to the era. It will be exciting to find out what happens within the novel and get more time with some fan-favourite The Acolyte characters.
The Art of The High Republic: Volume 2 – Set to release on August 19th, this new art book will cover phases 2 and 3 of the High Republic, featuring art of the characters, creatures, ships, and costumes. This will feel like a fitting end to the era, as it will hopefully provide us with artwork of several characters we haven’t had yet, especially within Phase 2, along with details about their creations and inspirations to help the High Republic feel ever more visual and an active part of the Star Wars galaxy. The book will be written by Kristin Baver, who wrote the first volume, and will also feature a foreword written by Rebecca Henderson, who played Vernestra Rwoh in The Acolyte.
Upcoming Star Wars shows and games from the era
Young Jedi Adventures: season 3 premieres this Fall, and will bring back Kai, Lys, and Nubs to Tenoo for more adventures. Whilst this show is mainly for young kids, there is plenty of High Republic goodness within the show for fans of any age, such as Bell Zettifar and his master Loden Greatstorm and the Starlight Beacon, which have shown up in previous episodes. It’s clear we can expect even more High Republic characters and locations to show up, even if the show does mostly stay clear of the Nameless and Nihil threats. There will also be a new trio of instrument-wielding droids for season 3 called Beepers, Dozer, and Gigi, which I’m sure will bring plenty of laughs and mishaps for the characters.
Star Wars Eclipse was first revealed way back in 2021 as a new AAA game set within the High Republic era. Made by Quantic Dream, it is set to be a “branching action adventure game” where your “actions have consequences” as you aim to keep the balance of peace within the Outer Rim. Not much else is known about this game, as there have been no updates since the reveal, other than an updated website for Star Wars: Eclipse back in 2023. The game could prove to be an exceptional game set within the era of the High Republic. As it is still in development, there could well be several elements from the books that are incorporated into the game.
Predicting the future for The High Republic
The end of Trials of the Jedi gave us several teases for possible future adventures within the High Republic era. One that I, and I’m sure everyone else, would want to see is that of Azlin Rell and Reath Silas, as the former has bled a lightsaber crystal red and ventured out into the galaxy as a potential Sith, and the latter is on the quest to find him and bring him back to the light. This could be one of the most interesting stories if it’s expanded on. It could possibly deal with what the Sith are up to during this era if Azlin ends up in contact with any of them out there, and his relationship with Reath could be even more interesting to explore as he aims to bring him back to the light, or we could see Reath explore the dark side more.
Other stories include Burryaga finding himself a new padawan, and the stories that could come from that. Alongside this, A Valiant Vow by Justina Ireland, the last middle grade novel, leaves us with Imri Cantaros and his new padawan, Tep Tep, which could also lead us into new stories, especially with the new generation of Jedi finding their padawans and passing on what they have learned from their time battling the Nihil.
There is plenty of High Republic content still to come, even with the main part of the era coming to a close. It will be great to see what future stories will be told or shown to us, no matter how long they take to come.
