First Report: ‘Deadpool 3’ Working Title Hints at Film’s Story

A few years ago, Disney bought Fox and got the rights to Deadpool and the upcoming Deadpool 3 movie. When Kevin Feige, Marvel’s honcho-in-chief, confirmed that the acquisition meant Deadpool would join the MCU in all his R-rated glory, fans were even more excited. We’ve been keeping an ear to the ground for news about Wade Wilson’s turned Merc with a Mouth and have an exciting update about Deadpool 3’s working title.

Deadpool 3 stars Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson, the fourth-wall-breaking Merc with a Mouth. Hugh Jackman returns in a starring role as Wolverine for the first time since 2017’s Logan. Rob Delaney will return as a human X-Force member. Emma Corrin, of The Crown fame, is new to the superhero gig, along with Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen.

A “Tidal Wave” of epic proportions

The Cosmic Circus can now report that Deadpool 3 is using the working title “Tidal Wave” as it progresses with production. We have also confirmed that the production is flying under the banner of Richmond Street Productions in the US and abroad.

Deadpool is a unique character. He’s a wisecracking mercenary with a fourth-wall-breaking sense of humor. Just like Deadpool himself, the working title for the film is a bit of a tease. But it does give us an intriguing clue as to where the story can go. Batman’s Gotham City isn’t the only major metropolitan area to face doom by water.

In the comic run Ultimatum, New York City is beset by a tidal wave as Magneto seeks revenge for the death of his kids after their death in The Ultimates 3Jeph Loeb and David Finch created the Ultimatum tomes in 2008 and 2009.

Deadpool 3 Working Title- Ultimatum

If Deadpool 3 involves a Tidal wave like in Ultimatum or any of the Ultimatum storylines, it certainly would be an interesting way for the third movie to unfold. For several months, there have been rumors about Magneto having some role in the trilogy. The working title gives some more fuel to the fire of those rumors.

The creative team for the third Deadpool film

Deadpool 3 is being written by Zeb Wells, a well-known comic-book writer who has also used his pen for television writing. Fans of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law will know his episode “The Retreat,” where Tatiana Maslany’s Jen Walters hilariously makes a trip to Emil Blonsky’s (Tim Roth) wellness retreat. The episode was a critical success, and not only that, but Wells has several Emmy nods (and a win!) to back up his writing skills.

Before Wells’ onboarding, The Molyneaux Sisters were developing and writing the project. They’ve also got Emmy nods and are best known for their work on Bob’s Burgers.

Shawn Levy, who worked with Ryan Reynolds on The Adam Project and Free Guy, will direct Deadpool 3. Levy’s name has also been in the mix for Star Wars, with the Hollywood Trades reporting last year that the Canadian director was developing a project for Lucasfilm.

Marvel Studios working titles and why they matter

When it comes to keeping its projects under wraps, much to fans’ chagrin, Marvel Studios is a master of secrecy. One of the ways they do this is by using working titles and LLCs.

A working title is a codename for a project. It’s used to keep prying eyes away from film sets and to help keep spoilers under wraps. For example, the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series uses the working title “Out the Kitchen.” Working titles are temporary and can be in-jokes for the production or have story implications. It’s become a popular pastime for people to try and figure out the connections.

A LLC, or limited liability company, is a company that is created to produce a specific project. Marvel Studios typically uses one LLC per project, so it’s a big deal when a new LLC pops up, and people take note. This is because it means that Marvel Studios is working on a new project. For example, The Cosmic Circus was recently able to match Cantina Productions LLC with the new Thunderbolts movie.

Where will Deadpool 3 film?

We don’t know precisely when or where the Merc with a Mouth’s new movie will film, but there are some clues based on the LLCs. The company branches are in the US as Richmond Street Productions LLC and in the UK as Richmond Street Productions UK LTD. Based on this, we can expect at least some filming in the UK.

Shepperton Studios, part of The Pinewoods Group, is no stranger to Marvel or high-profile productions. Pre-production is ongoing, and we’ll know more details as things kick into gear.

When to expect Deadpool 3 to hit theaters

Deadpool 3 is currently expected to release in theaters everywhere on November 8, 2024. Marvel’s shifting schedule may impact that. Last December, our own Alex Perez shared some thoughts on how things may move around for the company.

There’s no trailer for the movie yet either, but stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have had fun promoting it and their bromance on Twitter. Reynolds famously announced Wolverine’s inclusion in the film in September of last year after D23.

We’re in for a wild and irreverent ride here! But what do you think of the Deadpool 3 working title? Do you have a theory about the connection to the story?
