This year shows great promise for upcoming game titles, but with so many games releasing in 2023, which ones are people most excited for, and how many of them will be great titles? Below are some of my most anticipated games of 2023, in no particular order. Some of these are familiar titles while others will surely become popular in due time. Check out my list below and let us know on social media what games you’re excited for in 2023!
Alan Wake II
For people unfamiliar with the story, Alan Wake is a thriller action-adventure game developed by Finnish studio Remedy Entertainment. It tells the story of thriller novelist Alan Wake, who’s trying to find his missing wife in Washington, D.C. During his search for his family, he experiences supernatural events.
There are six main episodes and two additional episodes full of twists, cliffhangers, and disturbing moments to create a perfect immersion between the players and the world in the game.
Alan Wake II will be different, as it will now be a horror-survival game instead of an action-adventure, and players would not need to play the prequel to understand the sequel’s plot. The sequel will continue the story of Alan Wake but will explore the stories of supporting characters, including Wake’s friend Barry Wheeler and Sheriff Sarah Breaker, from the previous game.
Alan Wake is a great title and its sequel could become a possible Game Awards 2023 entrant.
Alan Wake II will be released on PC, Playstation 5, and Xbox Series S/X. (Official site, Release date: 2023)
Assassin’s Creed Mirage
2007’s Assassin’s Creed was supposed to be the next title in the Prince of Persia series, but the decision was made that it should be a separate title. Since then, the franchise has gained a fan base and in popularity. The current Assassin’s Creed games are more like a full RPG experience with lots of open-world quests to push the story forward.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage will return to the old formula with a smaller open world, non-RPG mechanics, and a more Assassin-like atmosphere pre-Assassin’s Creed Origins. This game is a prequel to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which will follow the main character from that game, Assassin Basim Ibn Ishaq.
We will learn about 9th-century Baghdad and have the opportunity to visit the unfinished fortress of Masyaf also known as the headquarters of the Assassins in real life and the first Assassin’s Creed game HQ. Excitement has been built for Assassin’s Creed Mirage after the first trailer at the Ubisoft Forward event in 2022, where it was a warmly received preview of what’s to come.
As a fan of the Assassin’s Creed series, I am patiently waiting to see what the finished product will look like because taking a step back and returning to the roots is a good idea for the franchise as a whole.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be released on PC, Playstation 4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and Amazon Luna. (Official site, Release date: 2023)
Forspoken
Forspoken (formerly known as Project Athia) is an RPG game from Luminous Productions, responsible for Final Fantasy XV. We don’t know much about Forspoken, but the story is said to follow Frey Holland, who was unexpectedly transported from New York to the fantasy world of Athia. She gains magical powers helping her travel the world and find her way home.
Forspoken is an open-world game that will allow players to travel anywhere they want, whenever they want. Players will gain a handful of spells and skills throughout the game that will help on the journey.
As someone who prefers to travel in an exciting and unique style through open worlds, Forspoken seems to do a good job at this. To me, it’s a little similar to the travel system in A Story About My Uncle, but only a little, and that’s why it’s such a good preview of what’s to come.
Forspoken will be released on Playstation 5 and on PC. (Official site, Release date: January 24, 2023)
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
This game is undeniably one of the most anticipated titles this year, not only by me but by the entire gaming community. The sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will give players the opportunity to learn what happened after the first game. They’ll see what good partners Peter and Miles are now, what has changed in the city, and how other character relationships have affected the plot of this game.
There are quite a few changes expected in the game, which will broaden players’ experience, as well as the feeling of being Spider-Man. For now, we know that the main villain of the game will be Venom, probably still connected to Harry Osborn. We’ll get the chance to wear even more suits than before.
I’ve been waiting for this game since the day it was announced, and of course, probably every Spidey fan will agree with me that this will be another great one.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be released for now only on Playstation 5 and probably in the near future on PC. (Official site, Release date: Fall 2023)
Resident Evil 4
Another Resident Evil remake means another great action-packed, survival and horror game from Capcom. If you haven’t played the original version, this one will focus on the story of Agent Leon S. Kennedy, who is on a mission to rescue the president’s daughter Ashley Graham.
The action will take place in a Spanish village that is dominated by a violent cult called Los Illuminados. They are working on an ancient parasite to do what parasites of this type do.
As in previous remakes, there are a lot of graphical improvements, mechanical fixes, buying and upgrading items, and even the ability to block our enemies’ attacks with a knife.
Resident Evil 4 will be released on Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and PC. (Official site, Release date: March 24, 2023)
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
We had to wait more than three years to receive a confirmation or any promotional graphics and videos from Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Set five years after Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Survivor will retain some of the gameplay elements and mechanics of its predecessor, while adding many new and improved technical elements designed to give players an even better experience.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor follows Cal Kestis, who is trying to survive on the run from the Galactic Empire. If you want to learn more about what to expect from Star Wars Jedi: Survivor be sure to check out my article.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will be released on PC, Xbox Series S/X, and Playstation 5. (Official site, Release date: March 17, 2023)
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is set in the Arkhamverse known from the Batman games Arkham Asylum, City, and Knight. It’s an action-adventure game that was developed by Rocksteady Studios and follows Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, and King Shark on their way to stop Brainiac’s invasion of Earth.
While trying to save the world they will have to, yes, you guessed it, kill the Justice League, whose members are controlled by a villain. Players will be able to explore the open-world Metropolis both during solo play and in cooperative multiplayer mode for four players.
In solo mode, you won’t have to play with just one character, as you’ll be able to freely switch between all of them while the others are controlled by the AI.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be released on Playstation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and PC. (Official site, Release date: May 26, 2023)
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
The upcoming sequel to The Legends of Zelda: Breath of the Wild titled Tears of the Kingdom will be the same action-adventure game, but with slightly revised mechanics and added features. Not much is known about the plot, but it is certainly the most anticipated game among Nintendo Switch players.
The game is being developed by the same team that worked on Breath of the Wild, and one of the newest features will be floating islands that will allow players to float between them just like in one of the previous games titled The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword from 2011.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be released exclusively on Nintendo Switch. (Official site, Release date: May 12, 2023)
