What To Expect: The ‘South Park: Snow Day!’ Game

Share this:

Get ready for another hilarious adventure in the snowy streets of South Park with the upcoming game South Park: Snow Day! It sounds like it’s going to be another cool addition to the franchise, bringing the iconic characters of Cartman, Stan, Kyle, and Kenny into the world of 3D gaming in a winter wonderland.

Developed by Question LLC and soon to be published by THQ Nordic, this upcoming sequel to South Park: The Stick of Truth and South Park: The Fractured But Whole will be the hottest “thing” on the game market. So let’s dive in and review the potential of this game.

[Warning: Spoilers from The Stick of Truth & The Fractured But Whole games are below!]

South Park games will have you laughing as you play

South Park: The Stick of Truth is a 2014 RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment in collaboration with South Park Digital Studios and published by Ubisoft. It allowed fans of the show (or just regular gamers unfamiliar with this world) to immerse in the crazy town of South Park. When we started the game, we assumed the role of the New Kid who landed in this epic fantasy conflict over its predecessor,  South Park: Stick of Truth. The game’s storyline quickly spirals into chaos, involving aliens, zombies, and gnomes who pose a deadly threat to the entire town of South Park.

The game is playable in the form of 2D graphics from a third-person perspective, mirroring the TV series’ style of telling the story. Players explore South Park, interact with characters, and undertake quests. They choose a class from the roster of Fighter, Thief, Mage, or Jew archetypes. Each provides unique abilities to help in combat with enemies using melee, ranged, and magical fart attacks.

The gameplay focuses on exploration, combat, and character progression. Players level up through experience points, unlocking abilities, and upgrades. Magic is represented by fart abilities (which is honestly quite hilarious), allowing for various interactions and attacks. Combat is turn-based, with strategic choices and support from allies like Jesus or Mr. Slave (I’m not even joking a little bit).

Story-wise, players control the New Kid, nicknamed “Douchebag,” who allies with Cartman’s faction to retrieve the South Park: Stick of Truth from the elves. The storyline provides us with really crazy moments like alien abductions, government cover-ups, and the outbreak of zombies. This culminates in a battle against the antagonist Clyde, and the resolution of the conflict. In the end, the New Kid’s group triumphs over evil, but realizing the danger of the Stick’s power, they get rid of it.

In the aftermath of their adventures, the children of South Park found themselves embroiled in a new saga of heroism. South Park: The Fractured But Whole, which is a direct sequel, makes them determined to make their place in the world of superheroes, as they embark on a quest to find a missing cat, with the promise of a $100 reward serving as their initial motivation.

But their seemingly simple mission soon unravels into a tangled web of conspiracy and deceit. Through a scheme involving the contamination of drugs and alcohol with cat urine, the new criminals try to cause chaos and blame the ensuing crime wave on the mayor.

As the situation escalates, the children, under the leadership of Cartman and his Coon and Friends, find themselves facing off against formidable adversaries and uncovering shocking mysteries. The true mastermind behind the chaos was revealed as Mitch Conner, a cruel hand puppet with sinister plans. In their quest for justice, the children formed unlikely alliances and battled against overwhelming odds. Along the way, they fight off their demons and confront the consequences of their actions. Despite their differences, they ultimately united against a common enemy, setting aside their rivalries for the greater good.

In the end, we realize that all of it was just a test of courage and resilience. But despite winning in the end (as they do) and celebrating, Professor Chaos ominously reminded the New Kid, that some truths are immutable, no matter how hard one tries to rewrite them. With a tantalizing offer of a darker path, the stage was set for a new chapter in their ongoing saga of heroism and redemption.

Delays in development for Snow Day!

The fun in the gaming world of South Park thankfully didn’t stop a few years ago. South Park: Snow Day! is a new entry in the South Park franchise that will introduce a thrilling multiplayer mode, where up to four players can join forces and wreak havoc together in the snowy streets of South Park in the same world. So you can play and invite your friends and have fun together.

The development of South Park: Snow Day! took a few years to get the ball rolling, with hints of its existence first surfacing following a lucrative deal between ViacomCBS and South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker in August 2021. With a breathtaking investment of $900 million, Stone and Parker set out to expand the South Park universe, including the creation of a groundbreaking “3D video game” that would push the boundaries of what fans had come to expect from the franchise.

Confirmation of the game’s development came in January 2022, when Question Games was announced as the developer, signaling a shift towards incorporating multiplayer elements into the franchise. Job listings for the project hinted at a focus on senior-level designers with experience in multiplayer games, further fueling speculation about the game’s multiplayer features. But after all this time, what can players expect once the game is finally released in due time? Can they provide the players with the same amount of action, humor, and craziness?

The story and gameplay in South Park: Snow Day!

As always, the game promises to deliver all the trademark humor and craziness that fans have come to know and love from South Park, with a story that will be as hilarious as it should be, and also unpredictable. As players dive into the game’s snowy world, they’ll find themselves in a wild adventure that’s absurd and entertaining at the same time.

Because the whole plot revolves around the catastrophic “Snow Day” (someone cast a spell to wreak havoc), there are battles against hordes of snowball-throwing enemies, other South Park citizens, and weird creatures. At first, Cartman and the others thought of this day as an opportunity to just have fun in the snow and do whatever they wanted. But as always, they were wrong, and once again, they’ll have to save their city and the world.

Just as in previous games, you’ll be able to create our characters and make them the way we want them to look and fight like. To fight the elves who are preparing to launch an attack on your “kingdom”, you’ll have to use different weapons. You can use a sword, bow, axe, shield, or others. There are some combos and blood effects, but the whole presentation of the gameplay is the same as the last time with some minor changes. But remember, you can’t just keep running directly into arrows and expect to stay alive for long.

Additionally, the game provides different mini-games like throwing snowballs or building bases, similar to Tower Defense. To me, it looks like there won’t be a moment to take a breath between activities because they’re so packed with action.

Of course, no South Park game would be complete without the series’ signature humor and offensive parts, for which people have adored this franchise. From clever one-liners to funny gags, finishing with unpredictable jokes coming out of nowhere. The game is packed with the brand of humor that has made South Park a cultural monolith for the past two decades.

What I think also deserves a small shout-out before the premiere is the visual presentation. Going from the 2.5D games, we’re venturing into full 3D gameplay. Even though we all recognize South Park as cartoonish, the characters shine in 3D. If I had to compare it to something, it’s a similar glow-up that Family Guy had, with its quality increasing over the years.

In conclusion, South Park: Snow Day! is shaping up to be the ultimate snow day adventure for fans of the series. With its mix of 3D gameplay, multiplayer mayhem, and classic South Park humor, the game promises to deliver an unforgettable gaming experience that will keep players entertained for hours on end. So grab your snow gear and get ready to join Cartman and the gang for the ultimate snow day adventure!

South Park: Snow Day! will be released on March 26, 2024 only on Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X&S, PlayStation 5 and PC.
